Mulloway - The Legend.
Years ago, "god that makes me feel old".
Not long after I began to fish around Barwon Heads, I started to hear about the local legend, and that was "Mulloway". A fish that grew to huge proportions and fought like hell!!!. It could strip line off the best outfits and still not be stopped.
Well we didn't have Google in those days.
I worked hard and stalked the boat ramps, and up and down the riverbanks. Striking up conversations with complete strangers trying to find out more. I was mister 50 !!! questions, a young bloke with nothing to loose. After pestering every angler I came across for weeks, I was armed and ready to tackle these great beasts.
After a few months, I was exhausted from lack of sleep, and ready to give up, "these things are a myth", just a lot of bull. But like all good fisho's I stuck to the task and eventually enjoyed success. All along the way I heard the odd whisper of an extraordinary Mulloway that had been taken from the Barwon River.
Legend has it.
Apparently back in the old days of Barwon Heads there was a young bloke call Bob. As a young larrikin, not to far out of school, he was one of the first to apply for, and obtain, an Abalone license in the area. An underwater adventurer was Bob. Discoverer of "shipwrecks". Word had it, that Bob had caught the biggest Mulloway ever taken from the Barwon. There were some pretty big figures quoted, "over 100lbs", I heard, time and time again.
I tried hard in those days to find out more, but I could never get "proven confirmation" that such a fish had been caught.
As time went on, and I came across more people, and the legend grew, "I heard that he speared it under the bridge!", someone said.
That's it, "I've been such a pest, their all spinning me crap", I thought.
Time passed.
